Josh Mason Josh Mason – Utility Music Book (book with CD)
»Westheimer's discovery: a few months in the lab can often save you a few hours in the library. Utility Music is the result of a year-long exploration of a Doepfer A-100 modular synthesizer system I put together myself from January 1 to December 31, 2019. It was my attempt to learn more about the basic building blocks of synthesis and explore the idea that interesting and compelling synthesizer-based music can be realized without the aid of modern DSP and "fancy" hardware within the format.
I would start each week on Mondays with a new patch and continue to develop it until the end of the week. On Saturday, I would "freeze" the patch and "perform" it without any new additions. Sunday was used to record the result, make notes on the patch, and disassemble the patch again so the process could start over the next day.
The audio portion of the project included on the CD is a mosaic assembled from these weekly stems.
Included with the CD is a 72-page perfect-bound book that contains more information about the project as well as weekly point-to-point patch notes and insights into the process.«
